Carta da IUIS

Caros, vejam a carta que recebi da IUIS.

Dear Members of the General Assembly,

I hope all of you are fine and that you enjoyed a wonderful summer (Germany did not witness the best one). I wanted to inform you about three important issues:

1. As you all know the 15th International Congress of Immunology (ICI) will take place from August 22 to 27, 2013. Recently the Board of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) was informed that the The Italian Society of Immunology, Clinical Immunology and Allergology (SIICA) will change the site from Rome to Milan. The reasons are manifold and Luciano Adorini will soon provide more information on this. The Executive Committee has agreed to this change and we are all convinced that this will be to the benefit of ICI 2013, IUIS and immunology as a whole. I am convinced that the 15th ICI in Milan will be a great success representing the full complement of one of the most vibrant scientific areas in biomedicine, immunology. Moreover, ICI 2013 will serve as an impressive platform for making laypersons, the press and politicians aware of the importance of immunologic research for maintenance of well-being and combat of major diseases. Last but not least, ICI 2013 will provide a unique platform for meeting colleagues, friends, post-doc candidates and mentors. In short it will be a wonderful meeting point for researchers from academia, industry and clinics, both from industrialized and developing countries. Milan is a historically fascinating and monumental setting with innumerable artistic, cultural and archeological treasures. Looking forward to meeting you all August 22-27, 2013 and please don't forget to note the change of location,Milan instead of Rome.

2. Following our discussions at the last General Assembly in Washington, DC, June 22, 2011, and the endorsement by the General Assembly to continue our negotiations with Jean-Loup Romet-Lemonne as consultant for the IUIS. I am pleased to announce that Jean-Loup and myself have now signed the consulting agreement. As you know, the consultant is supposed to support IUIS in many areas. Most importantly: (i) to improve IUIS visibility and (ii) to increase financial resources to sponsor special IUIS research and awareness programs, training, education and other activiites. The IUIS Executive Committee has been engaged in in-depth negotiations with Jean-Loup and we are all enthusiastic about his future activities for the IUIS. Please join me in welcoming Jean-Loup Romet-Lemonne to the IUIS.

3. The most recent and exciting news for immunology as you are all aware is that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2011 was given to three heroes of immunology: Jules Hoffmann, Bruce Beutler and Ralph Steinman. We immunologists from all over the globe are proud of them. We are also extremely saddened by the recent death of Ralph Steinman on September 30, 2010, only a few days before the announcement of this highly deserved award.

I am looking forward to meeting you all at our next General Assembly in relation to the 10th Congress of the Latin American Association of Immunology, which will take place May 29 to June 2 in 2012 in Lima, Peru.

With best regards,

Stefan H.E. Kaufmann
